What to Look for When Buying a Portable Diesel Generator

Buying a Portable Generator: What to Look ForThere are various reasons why you should consider getting a diesel generator: preparing for a sudden power outage, looking to run a job site, for recreational purposes and many more. However, picking the best model, able to suit your needs perfectly, is far from being an easy job, as there are a lot of aspects to consider.

In order to help everybody who is still not decided on what to buy, we’ve put together a list with everything you need to consider before examining the market and buying a portable diesel generator. Without much further ado, let’s begin!

How much power do you need?

Obviously, this is the most important aspect. Think about what are you going to use this generator for. Is it for powering a few electrical appliances when you run out of power or for taking it with you in an RV, during holidays? Pick the capacity wisely.

Secondly, make sure you also go through the types of outlets you need. There are smaller inverters generators which usually come with a couple of 120V AC outlets and a few USB ports. If you opt for a bigger capacity, like 4000 watts, the diesel generator will most likely have 240v plugs, alongside a few 120V outlets.

How often are you going to use it?

After deciding upon the power of your diesel generator, you should also think if it’s for occasional or consistent use. Most models come with a warranty that should cover you for a few years if you’re a regular user.

On the other side, if you’re going to get one for emergencies or recreational use, you shouldn’t have any problems picking a generator, as any reputable brand will work for you. Also, if you’re planning to buy one that will be used almost every day, it’s highly recommended to look for a model that has a legitimate commercial engine, which comes with a warranty that can last for up to one year.

What capacity does the fuel tank have?

From this point of view, it’s very easy: the bigger the tank, the longer you can go between refueling. Generally, diesel generators come with a fuel tank able to deliver around 8 hours of runtime at a load of 50%. Obviously, you can run for longer if you use a lower amount of the available power.

How noisy is it?

Last but not least, we shouldn’t forget about the noise either, since it can be an essential factor, depending on the environment in which it will be used.

Smaller generators will always be more silent, some of them being quieter than normal conversation levels. And they will be highly appreciated if you’re camping in an area that allows generator, for example.

In contrast, if you opt for a 4000-watt model, it’s less likely to be able to keep quiet.

These are just a few aspects one should take into account before getting a portable diesel generator. If you have any other questions regarding the acquisition process, Mid Florida Diesel will always be happy to help. With 25 years of experience, you can find here all the information you need!
